President's College Maharagama
School Profile
Though we do not possess a very long history we are extremely proud of our brief history we own. President's College Maharagama started as a new school with a group of students and a few teachers of Vidyakara Vidyalaya Maharagama on 18th of February 1978. According to the history records, the students were accommodated in dilapidated buildings which had been used as the hostels of Maharagama Training College. Earlier it had been used as Army Barracks and even before that as a rubber factory. At the very beginning it had been a property belonging to one Abeywardana family.
All the students and parents of Maharagama President's College are indebted to Mr. Premarathna Gunasekara, the then parliamentarian, and Mr. J.S.V.S. De Sozysa, the first Principal of the College and the then Zonal Director of Education, who were the pioneers of the College. Mr. J.S.V.S. De Sozysa laid a strong foundation for this College, and his yeoman and efficient service of 12 years contributed immensely to upgrading this college to its present state.
Mr. W.S. Ranasinghe, who was appointed as the second principal, added more important facets to the College such as the Prefects' Council, the Aesthetic Unit, and English Day Programmes, enabling the creation of a new outlook and reputation for the College and helping it keep pace with other leading schools in the island.
Mr. R.A. Premarathna, who assumed duties as the next principal, was able to increase the number of students up to 4000. As a result of his untiring efforts, he introduced cadetting, scouting, and a cadet band. During his term of service, Mr. S. Rajapakshe, the next principal of the College, was able to establish a Computer Unit and a three-storeyed building with an assembly hall. The College emerged as a premier school, not only in the area but also in the Sri Jayawardenapura education zone, with the arrival of the next principal, Mr. K.A.D. Punyadasa. Due to his dedicated service, he developed the College up to the standard of a national school, and many new features such as a wall around the school premises, new buildings, the Open Ground Theatre, the Prefects' Room, and the Media Unit emerged as a result.
In 2004, Mr. J.W.S. Siriwardana, a new principal, assumed duties as a blessing to the students and parents of the College. Among his new ventures were many important aspects — modernising the school ground, creating an open space assembly ground, and constructing a Shrine Room and a staff room. He also launched new projects such as Sil and meditation campaigns, sports festivals, and cultural programmes to uplift the moral and spiritual development of the students, and decentralised the management system to create a positive teaching-learning environment in the school.
Mr. W.J.R. Wimalasena assumed duties as the new principal on 1st August 2009 and, within a short period of his taking office, he reorganised the activities of the school with a new vision, re-established the Old Boys' Association, and secured its maximum contribution towards the development of the school. He launched several projects to uplift education as well as sports and other co-curricular activities, and undertook a massive effort to repair and colour-wash all the school buildings, making it a very attractive and pleasant place for students and teachers alike. He was also able to modernise the school library, canteen, main hall, and the primary section within a very short period of time, closing out his term on 6th December 2011.
On 6th December 2011, Captain Wasantha Kumara Wadugee assumed duties as the new principal, going on to lead the College for over fourteen years — the longest single term of stewardship in its history, until 2nd April 2026. Under his careful and disciplined leadership, President's College Maharagama grew into one of the foremost national schools in the Sri Jayawardenapura education zone, with the student population expanding well beyond 4,000. His tenure saw the foundation stone laid for a long-awaited college auditorium, the construction of a memorial dedicated to the college's war-hero teachers and students, and the continued strengthening of the school's uniformed and co-curricular units, including notable district-level success for the Scout Association. Today, the College is home to over fifteen active clubs and societies, modern sports facilities, theatre spaces, and a well-equipped computer laboratory — a fitting legacy of Captain Wadugee's long and dedicated service, which contributed immensely to the overall development of the College.
